BEFORE YOU CLICK, TAKE A MINUTE AND READ THIS LETTER WE RECEIVED FROM A PARENT OF ONE OF OUR STUDENTS.

”Wanted to send you guys a note to thank you for everything you’ve done for Josh. As a parent, if you are lucky, once in a lifetime your child will be exposed to people or an experience that will change their lives forever. You have done that repeatedly for Josh, and I am eternally grateful.

I brought you a shy kid, afraid to speak in public, struggling in school, trying to find himself. Through Tae Kwon Do and the ‘tenants of martial arts,’ you have touched Josh’s life, and the life of our family, in ways you will never know. My little boy he has grown into a young man with great morals, focus, and self-discipline. I frequently have people tell me what a great kid he is – and I immediately tell them its all thanks to you two, at Waldorf Martial Arts. You have an awesome program that not only teaches kids a martial art, but to use it responsibly. By teaching the kids this they learn focus and how to fit into today’s society. Whether you realize it or not, you are teaching not just Tae Kwon Do, you are teaching kids how to succeed in life.

I wanted to ensure you knew just how much you are touching the young lives in our community. You may not know it – but you are making a difference in young people’s lives. I am proud to know you and I am forever in your debt.”   Mark M. Josh’s Father

Waldorf Martial Arts’ mission, since opening in 1987, is to provide our students not only with the confidence that comes with learning how to defend yourself, but also with a moral culture to enhance their character and help assure their future successes.  We are true martial arts professionals and avid martial arts practitioners ourselves, who sincerely want to share the magic that the martial arts have bestowed on each of us, and, we know, can hugely impact the course of life of everyone in your family.

We promise to serve you, not sell you.  We aren’t sales people.  We are full-time Martial Artists with a genuine interest in serving our students.  We have undergone hundreds of hours of instruction to learn how to better teach preschoolers, elementary and middle school aged kids, teens, adults, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.

We sincerely want to help you with the personal development of your children.  We cultivate a healthy, family-centered environment.  Many members refer to us as their “extended Taekwon-Do family”.  We provide opportunities throughout the year for our families to get together socially and our kids to play, have fun, and make new friendships.  There’s really not anything else like it.  A positively charged family-centered place in which the entire family can participate and grow together.

Several things you should know and understand before calling us:

•  Taekwon-Do (the martial art we teach) is much more than a sports program. It is a discipline that requires time, patience, and perseverance.  It must be treated as an ongoing commitment and not a seasonal activity.  If all you are looking for is an activity for your child to do for a few months, then our program is not for you.  Taekwon-Do is a project that will require at least 2 to 3 years of study to realize the benefits, life skills, values, and moral culture of the Art.

•  We whole-heartedly believe in what we do here at WMA, but we can’t promise that anything will change if you, the parent/guardian aren’t 100% behind your child. That means committing to:  Bring your child to class 2 to 3 times a week,  sit in our lobby and watching him/her, having him/her practice at home for 10 to 20 minutes, 1 to 2 times a week, and give heart-felt positive feedback when they deserve it.

Not All Martial Arts Schools are Created Equal!  Here’s What Sets Our School Apart!

Our methods are very different than any other martial arts program in Southern Maryland.  We don’t operate under the “survival of the fittest” theory.  Instead, we nurture our students along patiently and encourage them in a positive, supportive, family-oriented environment which leads to much higher levels of success!

We treat each student in a way that rewards them even for their smallest achievements.  We teach that setbacks are not failures, but sooner or later, lead to success!  And guess what?  Students who stay in our program, emerge several years later totally transformed into a highly successful, more confident, more respectful individuals of character!

NEED MORE PROOF?  HERE ARE SOME UNSOLICITED COMMENTS WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM OUR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

“Your TKD classes have been a major contribution to Erin’s success in school because of the discipline, concentration, consideration for others and goal setting that was taught to her at WMA.  My advice to parents is that if you want to raise a child to be the child every parent wishes they had, Taekwon-Do at WMA is where you should take them.”       Pat F., grandmother of WMA students

“Tae Kwon Do has shaped our son into what he is today, and the lessons learned will carry him far in Adulthood.  We are eternally grateful. You know the apprehensions of having a son and what kind of man he will be, how he’ll make it through boyhood with all the pressures, challenges, and temptations.  You and Mr. C have not only taught him how to defend himself if needed, but respect for others and himself.  It’s challenging to raise a successful child and I truly believe we would not have been as successful without our community of friends and family.”  Marilyn W., Mother of WMA student

“Little did I know as the Cavanaughs were teaching me how to “kick and punch” they were also teaching me to believe in myself, to be a leader, and to never give up. These are all important qualities of a martial arts athlete, but more importantly these are important qualities any successful person will need in life. They never really told me “hey Jordan, were setting you up to be successful, we’re teaching you right from wrong in a way that’s fun to you.” But that’s exactly what they did. Taking a seven-year-old child and transforming her into a confident 17-year-old is what Taekwondo did to me. It made me who I am today, I wouldn’t be the confident, determined, and responsible girl I am without it. What I learned 10 years ago, I am still applying to my everyday life.”  Jordan R., student at WMA

“Your program is phenomenal, and it gave Myles the opportunity to enhance his self-esteem, courage and confidence.  Thank you for giving him this invaluable gift that will stay with him forever.”   Sue S., Mother of WMA student

8th Degree Black Belt Master Cavanaugh’s (owner of WMA) Personal Story: I know, personally, what the Martial Arts has done for me. As a young boy, I grew up in a large Southern city. I was not very aggressive and didn’t take much of an interest in team sports. But I went ahead and tried them, only to sit on the bench most of the time. When it came to defending myself, as all youngsters were eventually forced to do in our neighborhood, I tried my best to avoid getting in such predicaments, but at times it was unavoidable. On the outside I probably didn’t look scared, but inside I really was. At the time I didn’t realize it, but I had a weak sense of confidence in myself.

I dealt with my fears throughout high school and college. Then one day, a good friend of mine persuaded me to come with him to a meeting. A professor on the University’s campus was starting a Taekwondo program and was holding an informational meeting. My friend and I went and listened to the professor speak about what Taekwondo was and what it could do for us. He talked about the obvious benefits; self-defense skills, weight control, muscle toning, . . . physical improvement. But he also claimed that Taekwondo could increase one’s self-confidence and their self-esteem. He further claimed that Taekwondo Training could lead one toward attaining greater respect for themselves and others as well as patience and, yes, better grades! He spoke of five Tenets of Taekwondo; Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit.

After listening to his claims, I knew that if Taekwondo could do half of what he said it could, I was going to at least give it a try. So, my friend and I joined the program. To make a long story short, the professor was not lying that day. The program did what he professed it would do and the Tenets of Taekwondo became very influential in shaping not only our attitudes and behavior, but our destiny as well. They became the framework for our lives and today still play a major role in shaping what we think and do.

As time passed, my skill at Taekwondo began to grow and I began to notice changes in how I felt. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t afraid anymore. I actually had confidence in myself! My self-esteem had also improved. And my physical and athletic abilities became razor sharp. I know for a fact that Taekwondo saved me from a life of fear and despair. I know it can help strengthen your kids too; mentally, emotionally, spiritually, or physically, whatever it is they could use more of. And yes, it can help them get better grades too. Give it a try, like I did 41 years ago. Personally, I wouldn’t take even a million dollars to give back everything Taekwondo has given me!
